Music Appreciation – Cherry Hill Campus, Spring 2019
Course Description
This course is designed for both non-musicians and musicians alike. Throughout the semester we will examine a cross section of music, from classical through the top 40 pop songs of today. In an effort to develop a more informed opinion on the topic, we will analyze the fundamental aspects of music, on a variety of levels.
During the course of the semester we'll examine the historical, technical, musical and social components that relate to the Classical, Blues, Jazz, Rock and Pop genres. Additionally, this course focuses on the relationship between performer and listener, through the analysis of album reviews and critiques. We will discuss the methods used by performers and composers, gaining knowledge and insight to the creative process involved. Through constant listening and analysis we'll absorb a dynamic range of repertoire while relating it to the music we know today.
At the conclusion of this course students should be able to critically think about, discuss, listen and analyze music with a greater understanding of the creative process involved.
