DUE 12/15 @ 12pm: ALBUM REVIEW
(online submission-no class)
Over the course of next week before Friday, please send me the second song analysis for your review as well as any final drafts you'd like me to look over before submitting officially on Friday. I would like to read your work along the way and guide any problems or issues that come up in your review.
You do not need to turn in your paper in person. We will not be meeting face-to-face for the final week 12/15. I don't want to make everyone drive into the campus solely to turn in the paper, so in an effort to be more courteous to your time you can submit it online. Please email your review as a PDF to jantonacci@faculty.camdencc.edu or copy and paste into the submission box below. I will be grading the reviews during the day on Friday and will be sending back comments and your grade for both the review as well as the class in it's entirety.

Due 12/1- REVIEW THE REVIEW
Please remember that we will not be meeting in person today, Friday 12/1- class is canceled. In lieu of class, please review the content below. There are two separate assignments to submit- a review of an album review and draft/outline, and a corresponding video Before The Music Dies (this one is working properly). If there are any questions, please let me know. If you did not submit the homework for last week (11/24) then please submit ASAP. The video Standing In The Shadows of Motown is not functioning properly- so this is no longer due for credit. Please submit the song analysis however- because we're not meeting today I need to see what you're doing when you write about the songs you have chosen. I will be commenting back in the next few days with suggestions and ideas for you to consider for the next analysis.
Begin preparing for your album review projects. The best place to start is to read reviews! I've included some websites below that you can look at for guidance on style for your reviews.

PART 1: Review of the Review & Draft
Find at least one review of the album you've chosen, and answer the following questions in a 1-page response:
- Was the review thorough enough for you?
- What would you have liked to know more about?
- Did the review present any questions?
- Did the review concentrate too heavily on a particular topic?
- Did the review discuss specifically how the music sounded, or the creative process involved in the making of the album
Draft:
I want a one page outline of your review. On your outline, I want you to include the following information:
- Construct a basic outline for your assignment (bio info/influential info/review info/contextual info/musical info
- Compile pertinant biographical information about your artist/band (Jeopardy information...)
- Compile information regarding influences of your artist/band. What person or group of people are responsible for the mentoring of your artist/who most influenced their musical creativity.
- Read reviews (refer to this web page for the links to review sites) on the album you're doing. Find more than one review and analyze the approach taken by each critic. After you've compiled reviews on the album you've chosen, look at the album that preceded the one you're doing and repeat the same process. Ask yourself: Are there any differences/similarities between the most current album and the previous one? When completing a review, you need to contextualize other aspects that surround the album (ie. what came before it...and how was it received?).
PART 2: Before The Music Dies (below)
Watch the film above, Before The Music Dies and answer the questions below. This film is available on Amazon streaming service, but it is 30 minutes shorter. There is a section on Clear Channel and their influence over the radio waves. Clear Channel is painted in a bad light, and because of this (and their extreme power) the public film has been edited and the Clear Channel section was removed. The film above is the original movie–the complete version.
1. What are your thoughts on the way the “Music Industry” is presented in the film?
2. Do you think talent is important? Can someone be taught to be good at music?
3. What do you think of the interviews with concertgoers? Do concertgoers need to know a lot about the artist in order to enjoy the experience?
4. What impact does image have for a pop star?
5. Would you buy an album if you don’t know what the artist looks like?
6. What are you thoughts on the way in which radio stations are run? Describe your thoughts about global
corporations owning radio waves.
7. Having learned a great deal about music, what are your thoughts on the concept of auto-tune and general editing before an album/track is released? In your opinion, is the authenticity of the recording compromised during this process? Explain your thoughts on the post-production phase of recording.

Due 11/24 @5pm: NO CLASS (Thanksgiving Holiday)
We won't have class next week, but there are two assignments due. The first assignment is below. I want everyone to begin analyzing one of their songs for their review. The information I want you to focus on is below. Submit your analysis in paragraph form, don't list your answers. Remember this is part of a review, the reader wants to see a narrative that represents the song in question. This is the first time most of you are writing an analysis, so as overwhelming as it may feel, take your time and we'll shape it together over the next few weeks. I'll be commenting back with angles you can take, or ways in which you can improve your analysis. You'll need to choose two songs from the album to talk about at length- you can do more, but two is the required amount.
The second assignment is a film, Standing In The Shadows of Motown. The information about this film, and the corresponding questions are located at the bottom of this assignment. The film is about an hour and a half long, so don't wait until Friday morning to watch it. You can submit both assignments together, or separately as you see fit. Either way, both assignments are due by 5pm on 11/24.
Album Review Analysis Assistance
(READ ENTIRE POST– ASSIGNMENT IS LOCATED AT THE BOTTOM)
For next week, I want you to start focusing on the tacks that are on your album. First and foremost, it's important to listen to the album in one sitting, from start to finish without interruption. As you listen, gather general information about the flow of the album- both musically and lyrically. Albums are like books, in that, they should be listened to from start to finish- there IS a reason the tracks are in the order they appear. Use this first listen to document the 'bigger picture' of the albums purpose.
If you have trouble locating the album review assignment itself, be sure to click on the 'MUS Appreciation Hybrid' tab under Camden County College––and then click the 'Concert/Album Review Info' tab.
For your ease, the four points on the assignment itself have been copied below:
Utilize the four points listed below in writing your review.
First– Start with the music and lyrics (where applicable) on their own terms. Perform a song analysis. Measure levels of craftsmanship, creativity, thoughtfulness, and originality within the composed and performed sounds and words as you hear, and analyze them. In an album review, all tracks of the album do not have to be (and probably should not be) mentioned in detail. You should discuss several tracks in great detail (4–6), and others in less.
Second– How does the music and words (where applicable) compare to other music within this genre (and other genres) from the same time period? Some times albums are important because they are part of a zeitgeist (a cultural movement/energy) and, on the contrary, because nothing of great value has surfaced from that specific time period.
Third– Who are the musicians creating and performing this music? How did they arrive at this stage? What was the process like that specifically resulted in this album (i.e. the writing and recording of the album). Do they cite other artists and genres that were pivotal in inspiring to this moment? Who were their influences? More importantly, can you hear the sounds of other artists and genres seemingly resonating in the music? (These kinds of suggestions are tremendously helpful to readers to give them a better sense of how something might sound.)
Four– What is the social context of the album? This is more important when reviewing an album from a previous decade, but is still applicable when reviewing current albums. It's important to understand the issues the artists might be writing about or inspired by. Also, it's important to understand the world of listeners that the artists intended to spring the music upon.
For next week, I want you to complete a song analysis on one track from your album––you may do more, but I want to look at the first one. Type your analysis into a word processing document and save it along the way––when you're done with your analysis, submit it into the box below. I will critique your analysis and comment with suggestions for revision.

Standing In The Shadows of Motown
Watch the film above, Standing In The Shadows of Motown and answer the questions below. This film details the band behind the making of most of the records during the Motown Era. Little was ever known about the musicians in the studio, until this film was made. The historical significance of The Funk Brothers stretches far beyond the boundary of the recording sessions themselves- they were the Motown sound.
- Name 6 of the funk brothers and the instrument they play?
- Why did people move to Detroit?
- Who was the founder of Motown Records?
- What did Uriel Jones use for a bass drum?
- Name 3 of the Motown Artists
- List the 3 names for the Motown Studio
- What 2 British bands were influenced by Motown?
- What was the unusual place where the Funk Brothers hung out to escape?
- What Motown artist picked up piano and drum skills from members of the Funk Brothers?

- Are the artists being ripped off?
- Does the fact that Spotify and Pandora (much like YouTube and Rhapsody) function as promotional tools support an argument that the artists "should just be happy to get their material out" instead of being adequately compensated?
- What are your thoughts on this subject?
- Is the age of multimedia and technological growth aiding or hindering the music industry?
Due 11/10: Blues America Questions
Watch Blues America (a two-part film), and submit answers to both sets of questions in the box below. We'll be discussing the content covered in the film next week during our introduction to popular music and the album review assignment.

Due 10/27:
MUSIC APPROPRIATION ASSIGNMENT & READING
Your assignment for Monday is to find a song, or a piece that has been the subject of Musical Appropriation and Contrafactum–one song for each style (YouTube is best–you'll need to post the link below). After you've found your appropriate pieces, submit a paragraph or so for each song outlining some background information and information on the artist/composer and the original purpose or setting of the song and how it was reused (ex. this song was originally written for the 1986 Olympics, and was utilized in this commercial by...).
To aid your search, consider artists or composers that have had pieces used in commercials or films. Consider pieces that have been theme songs for sports shows or events. There are several functional pieces of music that are used on a multitude of platforms.
Submit your response in the box below.
MUSIC APPROPRIATION ASSIGNMENT & READING
- Musical appropriation is the use or adaptation of a work to serve something other than it's original purpose (ex. a popular song or classical/jazz pice being used in a commercial or advertisement).
- Contrafactum is a work setting new words to an established melody. (ex. God Save The Queen and My Country Tis' of Thee contain the same melody, however they share entirely different texts. The tune now known as The Star Spangled Banner first accompanied a text that was originally a drinking song).

Due 10/20: Stravinsky & The Rite of Spring
The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du printemps) 1913– Igor Stravinsky
Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du printemps) was so new and different that the audience at its premiere in Paris in 1913 rioted. Many found the harmonies, melodies, and rhythms to be beyond the limits of the acceptable, and they let their feelings be knowns. Yet within a few years it became an audience favorite around the world and remains so today.
In Ballet, music tells a story through movement. The idea of interpreting sound through gesture on stage has a long history, dating back to ancient times. Many operas, from the Baroque Era onward, have incorporated dance scenes. But the ballet as an independent genre–the focus of an evening's entertainment –did not come into its own until the nineteenth century. It has flourished since that time, however, thanks to the works like Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring.
Stravinsky's Rite was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes (The Russian Ballet), a company of largely Russian dancers who's home base was in Paris. The score follows the scenario of the ballot Stravinsky himself recalls as having first conceived in "a fleeting vision which came to me as a complete surprise...I saw in my imagination a solemn pagan rite. Sage elders, seated in a c rice, watched a young girl dance herself to death. They were sacrificing her to propitiate the God of Spring. I heard and I wrote what I heard. I am the belles through which Le Sacre passed." In the end, the scenario of the ballet was drawn up by Stravinsky and Nikolai Roerich, a leading expert in Russian folklore and ancient ritual. Originally called The Great Sacrifice, The ballet was eventually divided into two parts: (1) The Adoration of the Earth, and (2) The Sacrifice.
ASSIGNMENT: Watch the Rite in it's entirety (the recording is in three parts), and formulate a response in the submission box below. Consider this practice for writing the concert review. Treat yourself as critics, and do your best at being as thorough as possible in your description of the music (and choreography). While listening, consider the following:
Harmony: Are all the harmonies here tonal or atonal? (tonal meaning consonant, atonal meaning dissonant).
Form: Is the form of this piece easily recognizable, with clearly defined sections?
Choreography: Are you able to discern the story? The dancers present through movement and gesture the storyline of the ballet, what images, events, or moods come to mind as you listen to this music?
Timbre: This is an enormous orchestra, listen to the variety of sounds in all families of instruments: woodwinds brass, strings, and percussion. Do your best to describe the different moods and musical narratives created by the orchestra. Describe your experience listening to this music, what does the music specifically sound like?

Form: Is the form of this piece easily recognizable, with clearly defined sections?
Choreography: Are you able to discern the story? The dancers present through movement and gesture the storyline of the ballet, what images, events, or moods come to mind as you listen to this music?
Timbre: This is an enormous orchestra, listen to the variety of sounds in all families of instruments: woodwinds brass, strings, and percussion. Do your best to describe the different moods and musical narratives created by the orchestra. Describe your experience listening to this music, what does the music specifically sound like?

Remember, this is a narrative response. Don't answer these questions in bullet points.
DUE 9/29: Gretchen Parlato/SWV Listening Comparison
For your perusal and guidance, I've included two separate reading pieces that will better prepare you for the concert experience you choose to attend (re: the concert review assignment). How To Write A Music Review on A Concert and How To Write A Review will prepare you with preemptive suggestions before attending your concert. Please read these PDF's, they will assure your preparedness and provide you with suggested angles to approach writing your review. If you haven't done so already, please look through your personal schedules and align a date with a concert ASAP. This review will sneak up on all of us before we realize it. You must plan ahead.
SUBMISSION DUE: The two videos below represent different versions of the same song. What I'd like you to do for next week combines identifying musical elements in the context of a musical narrative. Listen to each recording three times. On each passthrough, listen on each of the three planes Copland discussed in the article from last week. Upon listening, and taking notes, I'd like you to construct a 1-page (2/3 paragraph response) related to the elements listed below:
1st Listen- Allow the recording to 'wash over you'. Listen to the track with an un-bias ear, as a reviewer would. Make subtle notes on generalizations of the overall sound/mood of the track, general comments related to the musical approach taken by each band.
2nd Listen- Listen for the mood evoked in each track. What effect does a change in style or musical approach have on the mood or emotion conveyed in each track?
3rd Listen- Make note of as many musical elements as you can pull out. Discuss the differences in instrumentation and musical texture between each track. Are there any similarities? What are the differences?
Combine your listening into a narrative response and submit in the box below. Please let me know if you have any questions- remember, you can't get this assignment wrong, please try your best (as tough as some of this may be for a few of you).
For those who are interested in reading up on each of these artists, I've included a well-cited Wiki article for SWV as well as the website for Gretchen Parlato, click on the names to read more on each artist.

Due 4/14: Two Assignment Submissions
SUBMISSION 1:
MUSIC APPROPRIATION ASSIGNMENT
Your assignment for Friday is to find a song(s), or a piece(s) that has been the subject of Musical Appropriation and a song or piece that has been the subject of Contrafactum–one song for each style (YouTube is best–you'll need to post the link below). In a 1-2 paragraph response please tell me what songs you have found, and what the purpose of the original song was.
To aid your search, consider artists or composers that have had pieces used in commercials or films. Consider pieces that have been theme songs for sports shows or events. There are several functional pieces of music that are used on a multitude of platforms.
As a reminder, once you've found the original song/piece for each style, provide some information on the composer/artist and the original purpose or setting of the song (ex. this song was utilized in the 1986 Olympics, and was rearranged by.....).
Submit your answers in the box below.

MUSIC APPROPRIATION ASSIGNMENT
- Musical appropriation is the use or adaptation of a work to serve something other than it's original purpose (ex. a popular song being used in a commercial, with different text, but sharing the same melody).
- Contrafactum is a work setting new words to an established melody. (ex. God Save The Queen and My Country Tis' of Thee contain the same melody, however they share entirely different texts. The tune now known as The Star Spangled Banner first accompanied a text that was originally a drinking song).

Theme & Variations Listening: Arthur Pryor (1870-1942)- Blue Bells of Scotland (circa 1905)
Listen to the recording below and formulate a response (submitted in the box below) based on the following components (you'll need to listen more than one time):
- Melody- Listen for the introductory theme, after the opening statement. With each section that goes by, what aspect of the music is being variated? The melody? Accompaniment? Please explain.
- Form- Listen to the structure of the work as a whole. How many parts does this piece have (introductory material, variations, interludes, etc...)? **The unaccompanied sections are called cadenzas**
- Timbre/Texture- Listen to the accompanying ensemble throughout the piece. How does the ensemble vary when the soloist is playing as opposed to when he isn't playing? Listen for the accompanying material behind the soloist, as well as the interludes between variations.
Let's also consider the musician's execution of the performance (consider yourselves 'reviewers' and don't treat this like an opinion-based response:
- What is most impressive about the work (consider the compositional construct AND the way in which is has been performed)
- How would this piece sound if it were arranged for piano? Would a performance with a pianist change the interpretation of the performer? What elements (if any) would he/she need to take into account?

NARRATIVE RESPONSE (50pts): CLICK HERE to read the article titled Making Cents. In a one page response, communicate your best reaction to the material discussed. Are the artists being ripped off? Does the fact that Spotify and Pandora (much like YouTube and Rhapsody) function as promotional tools support an argument that the artists "should just be happy to get their material out" instead of being adequately compensated? What are your thoughts on this subject? Is the age of multimedia and technological growth aiding or hindering the music industry? Submit your response in the box below.
The aforementioned aspects of your album review will be contained in the opening page(s), while a majority of your critique will focus on the treatment of the music itself. It is only after this information is sought out and drafted that we can begin incorporating the musical discussion.

Due 2/4:
Due 4/30:
- NARRATIVE RESPONSE (50pts): Read the Copland excerpt titled How We Listen. In a 1 1/2–2 page response, summarize his discussion of musical planes and their respective functions. Analyze your own method of listening and figure out which musical plane you fit into (it is possible to be in two at once, but really think about it before you answer). Is it possible for everyone to access all three planes? Explain your thoughts. This assignment must be typed and printed.
- PRACTICE: Utilizing the metronome website (66-80bpm), practice duets part 2a and 2b from Rhythm Exercise Sheet 1a. Both duets focus on rhythm in a triple meter (3/4). Practice slowly and concentrate on rhythms before adding the accents. Duet part 2a introduces the time signature with most of the rhythmic values we've studied so far (quarter note/rest [1beat], eighth note/rest [half of one beat]. Duet 2b eases up on the rhythmic complexity and concentrates on accents, practice slowly and with the metronome. In your practicing, write down any questions or problems you're encountering and feel free to bring them up in class. I'm sure there are others who have the same issues, don't be afraid to ask questions, that's why you're there. On Monday 2/4 you'll be asked to play parts of each duet.
Due 4/30:
- Study material from the Early Blues & Jazz page for a test next week. The test will include the following material (this test is not multiple choice):
- Early African American sacred and secular music
- Characteristics of Ragtime & Stride piano playing
- Typical instrumentation of Dixieland band/characteristics of dixieland music
- Influential performers of Ragtime/Stride (2 for each one)
- Early theatrical forms of entertainment (and influential elements that were developed in each form)
- Characteristics of country and city blues
- Performers of country blues (2)
- Performers of city blues (2) as well as three characteristics of each performer
- 12-bar blues progression
- Read the article Making Cents and be prepared to discuss in class next week. It's a very interesting read...I'm quite curious to discuss this with each of you.

- Musical appropriation is the use or adaptation of a work to serve something other than it's original purpose (ex. a operatic work being used in a commercial advertisement)
- Contrafactum is a work setting new words to an established melody. (ex. God Save The Queen and My Country Tis' of Thee contain the same melody, however they share entirely different texts. The tune now known as The Star Spangled Banner first accompanied a text that was originally a drinking song).
Your assignment for Friday is to find two songs, or a pieces that have been the subject of Musical Appropriation AND Contrafactum–one song for each style (YouTube is best–you'll need to post the link below).
To aid your search, consider artists or composers that have had pieces used in commercials or films. Consider pieces that have been theme songs for sports shows or events. There are several functional pieces of music that are used on a multitude of platforms.
Once you've found the original song/piece for each style, provide information on the composer/artist and the original purpose or setting of the song (ex. this song was utilized in the 1986 Olympics, and was rearranged by.....).
Submit your answers in the box below.

Life Soundtrack Essay- Narrative Response (50pts–submit below)
The blues genre is a genre about hardship and strife. Ultimately, blues aims to tell a story- I want you to tell yours.
- In a two page narrative (double spaced), write two stories about major life experiences (positive or negative) that you or someone you know has experienced. If music were to accompany each story, what would it sound like– describe the genre, mood, instruments, texture, etc…don't just give me a pre-existing song, be creative.
- How would the music vary from one story to the next? Your narrative should include as much musical description as possible, within the context of each story (be CREATIVE). Submit this into the Response submission form below.
I suggest typing (and saving) this into a Word document and copying/pasting into the form below.
