Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics

Picture
Aretha Franklin needs no introduction. The gospel, R&B, soul and sometimes-jazz singer has won 18 Grammy awards and worldwide recognition over the course of a storied career spanning six decades. At 72 years old, she doesn’t need to reinvent herself or prove herself; her legend and her legacy have been established. She’s the original queen (Beyoncé can bow) and an artist to whom society as we know it is indebted. The best tracks on Aretha Franklin Sings The Great Diva Classics actually come in the form of mashups. Franklin integrates Destiny’s Child’s “I’m A Survivor” into a nu-disco version of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” and mixes Nikolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson’s Motown classic “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” into Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” These clever reinterpretations serve to bridge the old and the new, connecting the original Queen of Soul to the generations who will continue to follow this musical role model.

You & Me

Picture

The album You & Me by the band Lady, is a concept album about relationships. Just like most relationships, the CD has many different layers and textures to it. I am sure that everyone can relate to trust, hopes, dreams, fear, and sometimes pain that can be experienced through a relationship. All of these can happen at the same time, making a relationship complex. Because of it's nature, questions can arise from one party to another. Within the new release "you & me" the band Lady has opened up their collective soul to explore relationships and the questions that come during the good times and during the end times. Each song is ether asking a question or answering one about the relationship, to the enjoyment of all of us to hear. (Ropeadope, 2011)

The first single stateside, and title track “Alone Together,” is a sultry collabo with fellow UK native Marsha Ambrosious. While his current UK single, “Remember Me” featuring Pop star and label mate Jessie J, is a funky, headboppin’ jam, showing the diversity of Daley’s undeniable talent.

Spirals and Lines

Picture

Spirals and Lines is a consistently colorful and intriguing set by the very talented singer-arranger-composer Kayle Brecher. Exploring the sound of brass with voice in the unique ensembles, she also utilizes the remarkable sousaphonist Jimmy Parker, guitar, piano and drums but no string bassist or reeds. Performing sophisticated and often-political lyrics that are universal and topical, Ms. Brecher displays a highly expressive voice with a wide range, a deep understanding of the lyrics and a joyful scatting style. This is a CD that certainly rewards repeated listening.  (Self Released, 2012)

Science & Advice

Picture
Science & Advice is the first LP released by The Armchairs, a local Philadelphia rock quartet. This album is a mind-bending variety show of breezy psychedelic  tunes, jaunty British Invasion hooks and lysergic instrumentals. (Punk Rock Payroll, 2010)

Chasing Another Sundown

Picture
Kasper’s Chasing Another Sundown is such a beautiful, varied collection of songs that it’s almost impossible to describe them. They stylistically clip everything from ballad and bluegrass to crooning and folk, yet there is an idyllic sense of purity to each. (ChrisCasper, 2009)

In The Weird Small Hours

Inspired by Frank Sinatra's In The Wee Small Hours, Phil Roy has gathered a collection of songs from writers whose narrative moved him in the same way but with modern sensibilities. The release includes songs of Ryan Adams, Elliot Smith, Radiohead, The Eels, Conor Oberst, Joseph Arthur and others. (R.E.D. Distribution, 2009)

Tony Caruso's Final Broadcast

Picture

Paul Salerni’s award-winning opera with a libretto by Dana Gioia takes place in a classical music radio station on the last night of its operations. Its last program, ‘Opera Lover’, is hosted by Antonio Caruso, who remembers his early dreams of artistic fame as the ‘second Caruso’ and is visited by three ghosts—his dead mother, Maria Callas, and a mysterious woman. Praised for his ‘resplendent vocalism’ (AmericanRecord Guide) and his ‘lusciously sweet voice, with its ringing, perfectly-tuned high notes’ (Opera Now), the young tenor Eric Fennell sings the title role. (Naxos, 2004)

"Jarred is my go to trombone player for classical, jazz, and pop, as well as, to mentor my students. He is such a brilliant player and has a personality to match."
